Lawrence Cummings, a Santa Rosa, California native, began his career as an opera singer. After only one year of voice lessons in the prep department of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, he made his debut at 17 years of age at the coveted Davies Symphony Hall as tenor soloist in Handel's "Messiah." He has subsequently sung with numerous opera companies and symphony orchestras, including the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, Knoxville Symphony, Caramoor Music Festival, Central City Opera, and Opera Memphis. He has also worked with the celebrated Marilyn Horne, Kiri Te Kanawa, Ruth Ann Swenson and Lawrence Brownlee.
A versatile vocalist, Mr. Cummings has performed on and off Broadway as well as on Broadway National Tours playing Sportin’ Life in PORGY AND BESS, Jesus in JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR along side Carl Anderson (NAACP Award nomination, best theatre ensemble), and in Camelot along side Lou Diamond Phillips. His regional theatre appearances include regional premieres across the United States, including critically acclaimed lead roles as: Sebastian in THE LITTLE MERMAID; Eddie in SISTER ACT; Terk in TARZAN (Saturn Award winner, best live production); Victor in SMOKEY JOE'S CAFE; and John in MISS SAIGON, performing in Macau, China to close the Macau International Music Festival (Ovation nomination). His recording projects include an album with Sony music producer Automatic (Bruce Vanderveer) and “A Simple Christmas,” produced by Grammy Award winner Alexander Track.
Mr. Cummings has also ventured into television/film projects, playing a lead role in a pilot with Patrick Dempsey and John Larroquette, a Vj on "Live from the Blue Palm" for BET, and a featured role in "The Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End," including solo work on the soundtrack composed by famed film composer, Hans Zimmer.
Mr. Cummings has sung throughout the country and across the globe, including performances in Merkin Concert Hall and Alice Tully Hall, production tours on Oceania Cruises (Jean Ann Ryan Productions); performance duets with legend Carly Simon in concert; and numerous solo shows. He received his BM and MM degrees from the Manhattan School of Music and, over the course of his career, has distinguished himself as: winner of the Ned Rorem Art Song Competition, recipient of the Leslie Urquhart Foundation scholarship, and winner of the NATS Artist Awards Competition (Northern California).
